Giten Gensho (義天玄詔)
Giten Gensho (1393-April 17, 1462) was a priest of the Rinzai Sect of Buddhism in the mid-Muromachi period. His secular surname was Soga. His imina (personal name) was Gensho. Another name of his was Giten. And his posthumous name was Daiji Eko Zenshi. He was from Tosa Province.
At the age of 18, he became a priest studying under Meion GIZAN, and trained himself in Buddhist ascetic practices at the Kennin-ji Temple in Kyoto and the Zuisen-ji Temple at Inuyama, Owari Province. In 1428, Soshun NIPPO of the Zuisen-ji Temple approved him to attain spiritual enlightenment. After that he practiced Zen meditation in various temples, and in 1450 established Ryoan-ji Temple in Mt. Kinugasa in Kyoto, and then moved to Daitoku-ji Temple in 1453.
